In Memoriam: Sybil Kay

by | Apr 5, 2024

Sybil Mahaffey Kay passed away peacefully on Monday, April 1, 2024. Sybil will be missed by her family and friends.

She was born in Spartanburg County, SC on December 8, 1931, to the late Otis and Ruby Mahaffey. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Kay, Sr., and her sister Jane Fox. She is survived by her brothers; Larry Mahaffey, Doug Mahaffey, her sons; Donald Kay, Jr., (Lisa), Jerome Kay, (Joy). She was fortunate to spend time with granddaughters Morgan Lyda, (Cory), Madison Kay, Jennifer Herring, (John), Jordan Cooner (Will) and three great grandchildren; Jones Lyda, Elizabeth (Ellie) Herring, Jackson (Jack) Herring, Riley Cooner and one on the way.

Sybil was appreciated for her love of traditions and set standards for the rest of her family they still cherish and follow today. This trait probably was a result of her 28 years of teaching at Davidson Elementary School and being the oldest of 4 children. She grew up in Grambling, SC and was a graduate of Winthrop College where she and Don first met and later married. In 1954 she and Don moved to Buena Vista, Virginia where her two sons were born and they transitioned with Don’s work to Davidson, NC in 1965, where they lived their remaining years. She and Don relocated to The Pines at Davidson in 2012. They enjoyed spending time with their many friends and neighbors until the end of the 67 years of marriage.
Sybil always enjoyed the companionship of her many friends playing bridge and socializing with her book club. She cherished gardening, traveling, cooking and her family, especially her grandchildren. Her love of the beach kept her and Don traveling to spend as much time as they could by the water (her favorite).

Her family would like to extend gratitude to The Pines and Dr. Ronnie Beamon for their many years of loving care to Sybil. The family would also like to thank VIA Health Partners (Hospice) for their service and assistance during her final days.

Memorials may be made to Davidson United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 718, Davidson, NC 28036.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, April 7th at The Pines (Davidson Room) at 2:00 PM with a visitation to follow. A graveside will follow at Mimosa Cemetery in Davidson at 4:00 PM.

James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
