Indigo Girls First Concert(s) at Davidson College
The Indigo Girls will be in concert at Davidson College on April 26.
By now you have likely seen the announcements that the Indigo Girls will be performing at Davidson College on April 26. The concert will be the first such event held in the new stadium.
Much has been said about the duo’s sold-out 1990 concert in Love Auditorium in the various press releases from the college about the upcoming concert.
What hasn’t been mentioned is their first concert(s) at Davidson College – they performed two concerts in the 900 Room on April 19. One concert was at 10 p.m., and the other at 11:30 p.m. Thankfully, their concert in April 2024 is slated to start at 7:30 p.m. [see a short history about the 900 room at the end of this article]
As word of the upcoming concert spread across social media, a number of Davidson folks shared memories of that first concert.
Ruth Pittard, the Program Coordinator at the Union at the time, had the best description:
“Their first time at Davidson was in the 900 Room for, I believe, about $100 or even free, they played so well and Eric ended up duct taping one of their guitars and fixing a guitar string that broke mid-performance. One of their brothers? was a Davidson student at the time? Can’t remember all. Just especially remember Erik saving the concert in his usual, hair flying, emergency way. Thank you for your note of remembrance that we were there at their beginning. Such fun memories!”
Sheryl Aikman, Class of 1987 commented: “I was on the Union Board. We paid them for gas money and with an amazing meal from Ruth Pittard’s kitchen.”
Davidson alumna, Linda Tatsapaugh, said: “it was Amy’s brother Larry who brought her. I remember him encouraging people to come. For the very large sum of $3.”
Another Davidson alumna, Leia Scofield, had a more recent recollection: “They (with the Dallas Symphony) were the last show I saw before onset of the pandemic. They’re still so good.”
So, just over 38 years after those first concerts in the 900 Room, The Indigo Girls return to Davidson – get your tickets now.
And it appears that an entire contingent of 1980s alumnae will be in the crowd.
