Baseball Travels to Saint Louis This Weekend

Michael O’Shaughnessy went 6 for 11 in the Wildcats’ 2023 home series with Saint Louis.

 

On the road for the second straight weekend, the Davidson baseball team will visit Saint Louis for a three-game set, beginning Friday.

The Wildcats are 2-4 in Atlantic 10 Conference play after taking two of three from Saint Joseph’s at home and losing all three games at VCU last weekend.

LATEST ON THE ‘CATS
• Davidson is 14-17 overall and was rained out against Winthrop Tuesday.
• The Wildcats rank third in the league in team on-base (.415) and slugging (.433) percentages and lead the A-10 with 195 walks.
• Davidson’s pitching staff ranks third in the A-10 with 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings.
• Catcher Jacob Friend has a knack for getting on base. He is the A-10 leader with a .573 on-base percentage and 36 walks and is also hitting .329 with a 1.173 OPS.
• Infielder Eli Putnam is hitting a team-best .339 and also leads the team with nine doubles and 70 total bases. He’s hit seven home runs and driven in 34.
• Infielder Michael O’Shaughnessy is hitting .324 with a 1.069 OPS and leads the Wildcats with eight home runs, 37 RBIs and a .604 slugging percentage. He’s second in the league with 37 RBIs.
• Shortstop Nick Calero is the league leader with four sacrifice flies, and catcher Noah Jouras is second with three triples.
• Pitcher Cooper Cavanaugh is allowing 6.69 hits per nine innings, third-fewest in the league.

SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS
• Saint Louis enters 22-8 and 4-2 in the A-10.
• The Billikens are one of three teams (also Dayton and George Washington) that are 4-2 in league play, trailing only VCU (6-0).
• SLU has won six of its previous eight, including a 13-5 non-conference victory over Southern Indiana Tuesday.
• In A-10 play, the Billikens swept Rhode Island (March 28-30) and lost two of three at Saint Joseph’s last weekend.
• Prior to losing the last two games of that series, SLU had won five in a row.
• The Billikens are the best hitting (.332 average) and highest scoring (9.3 runs/game) team in the A-10. They have hit 37 home runs, second-most in the league.
• SLU’s pitching staff ranks third in the A-10 with a 5.43 ERA and second with a 1.83 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 9.38 hits allowed per nine innings.
• Outfielder Patrick Clohisy is the top offensive performer in the A-10 thus far. He leads the league in average (.443), hits (51), slugging percentage (.774), OPS (1.338), runs (43), total bases (89) and triples (5). He also ranks second with a .550 on-base percentage and 37 RBIs and third with 17 stolen bases.
• Clohisy has hit six home runs, along with outfield mates Tyler Fogarty and Hayden Moore.
• Fogarty has also driven in 37 runs and is hitting .373.
• In less plate appearances, Moore is hitting .394 with a 1.349 OPS.

SERIES HISTORY
• The Wildcats and Billikens first met in 2015, the Wildcats’ first A-10 season.
• The Wildcats lead the series 19-10.
• Davidson swept the Billikens at Wilson Field last May and have won the last five matchups, including two of three at Saint Louis in 2022.
