DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women’s tennis team came up short in its regular season finale with a 4-1 loss to South Carolina State University Saturday afternoon.

“SCSU is a very good team and we had opportunities to win the doubles point and also had chances in singles,” said head coach Susanne Depka. “We competed well and did a great job supporting each other. The team should hold their heads up and take confidence from this match going into the conference tournament.”

Prior to Saturday’s match, the women’s tennis team honored its lone senior Emma Heiderscheit for all her contributions to the program over her years at Davidson College.

“I was so happy for Emma,” said Depka. “She played amazingly and with so much spirit. She was so loud and helped her team tremendously today. It was a great end to the regular season for her.”

The Wildcats struck first in doubles action with the duo of Heiderscheit and Savanna Kollock earning a 6-4 win on court two. The Bulldogs answered by taking the match on court three in similar 6-4 fashion. With the doubles point being decided on court one, Daniela Porges and Kavya Patel had match point at 5-4 but SCSU was able to storm back and come out with a tiebreak win 7-6 (1).

The Bulldogs extended their advantage two 2-0 with a win in the No. 2 spot before Davidson claimed what would be its lone point of the day via commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory by senior Heiderscheit on court three.

South Carolina State followed suit with a two-set victory in the No. 1 spot before clinching the match with what was nearly a three set fight on court four.

Despite the match being clinched, freshmen duo Bryson Langford and Charlotte Calderwood were up one set on courts five and six respectively for the ‘Cats.

Heiderscheit rounds out her home playing career with a pair of wins following the match.
