Men’s Track and Field Compete at Wake and South Carolina

by | Apr 22, 2024

The Wildcats return to Charlotte’s Belk Track for the Charlotte Invitational next weekend.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. / COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Davidson College men’s track and field team traveled to two different meets over the weekend, the Wake Forest Invitational and the University of South Carolina’s Outdoor Open.

Davidson’s weekend was highlighted by Jayden Smith getting back atop the podium in the 110-meter hurdles, a record-shattering performance by Grahm Breiter in the steeplechase, and more season and personal-bests.

Things got started yesterday evening as Jack Muldoon and Breiter made the short trek to Winston-Salem. Muldoon was the first to go in the 800-meters and ran a career-best time by clocking in at 1:50.53. His new mark is currently fourth in the A-10.

A few hours later, Grahm Breiter toed the line for the elite heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Ladera Ranch, Calif. native rose to the competition and broke the school record by over eight seconds. Friday’s time of 8:53.74 was good for an 11th place finish out of 48 other runners. It is also the A-10’s top time coming into Saturday. Breiter held the previous record in the event with a 9:01.20 at last year’s conference championships.

On Saturday, nineteen Wildcats made the trip to South Carolina, including junior Jayden Smith.

Smith, who has been working his way back from an injury late in the indoor season, showed that he is back in top form. The Richmond product cruised to a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a near-record time of 13.46 seconds. His time ranks tied for fourth-best in the East Region, but a positive wind factor of 2.7 will likely nullify the mark. Smith’s season-best of 13.81 seconds currently sits top-20 in the region.

In throws, Jack Stajos recorded a season-best in the shot put. The Charlotte native sent the weighted ball 15.93 meters to take seventh at the meet. Saturday’s throw was also the third-longest in program history.

Rounding out the day, junior Nathan Stewart ran a personal-best in 1,500-meters, and freshman Chris Thompson had a personal-best in the javelin with a mark of 49.62 meters.
