Flagship summer musical 9 TO 5 will be followed by RIPCORD and FOOTLOOSE

Davidson Community Players (DCP), Lake Norman’s largest theatre producer, will soon kick off its most ambitious summer season yet, with its celebrated annual two productions at the Duke Family Performance Hall plus an additional musical at Cain Center for the Arts.

9 to 5: The Musical will be the first summer entry, playing at the Duke from June 20-30. Based on the iconic film, this Tony-nominated Broadway spectacle with original music by Dolly Parton is a boisterous look at some glass-ceiling-smashing women sticking it to the man in their 70s office. Mary Poppins director Tod A. Kubo will return to DCP to lead an electric cast including Jenna Tyrell, Nonye Obichere, and Ava Smith.

Following 9 to 5 will be Ripcord, award-winning writer David Lindsay-Abaire’s hilarious and moving story of disgruntled roommates. But instead of students in a college dorm, these roommates are two senior women at an assisted living facility. A seemingly small show that erupts with unexpected theatricality, Ripcord will fill the Duke with the pain and wonder of finding harmony at any stage of life. Ripcord runs July 18-28. Matt Webster will direct.

The summer season will conclude in August with a dramatic expansion of DCP’s “Teen Summer Stock” (TS3) program. 80s nostalgia will run amok at Cain Center for the Arts with TS3’s production of Footloose, honoring 40 years since the hit movie’s release. The production will be performed entirely by teens and young adults from the region. DCP’s Education Director Katie Mullis (Frozen, Jr.) will direct.

DCP Executive Director Steve Kaliski says, “While many theatres go dark over the summer, DCP has become known as an organization that puts pedal to the medal June through August. Our awesome line-up of shows this summer will live up to that reputation, and we’re excited to extend our relationship with the Cain through our ever-popular TS3 program.”

The summer season follows widespread audience and critical acclaim for DCP’s first two shows this year, Frozen, Jr. and Fun Home.

Tickets for 9 to 5 and Ripcord are now on sale, and Footloose tickets will be available early summer.
