Main Street Books invites the community to an evening with WFAE host Tommy Tomlinson author of “Dogland: Passion, Glory, and Lots of Slobber at the Westminster Dog Show” on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. at The HurtHub@Davidson, 210 Delburg St, Davidson. Tommy Tomlinson will be in conversation with journalist and author Michael Kruse.

From Pulitzer Prize finalist Tommy Tomlinson comes an inside account of the Westminster Dog Show that follows one dog on his quest to become a champion—and explores the bond between dogs and their people.

“Tommy is such a beloved writer. We are delighted that he’s returning to Davidson to regale us with the story behind the story of Dogland,” said Main Street Books Owner Adah Fitzgerald.

About the author: Tommy Tomlinson has hosted the podcast SouthBound for WFAE since 2017. He also does a commentary, On My Mind, which airs every Monday.  He’s the author of “The Elephant in the Room,” a memoir about life as an overweight man in a growing America. He spent 23 years as a reporter and local columnist for the Charlotte Observer, where he was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in commentary. He has also written for publications including Esquire, ESPN The Magazine, Sports Illustrated, and Garden & Gun. He’s a graduate of the University of Georgia and was a 2008-09 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. Tommy and his wife, Alix Felsing, live in Charlotte.

About Michael Kruse: Michael Kruse is an award winning senior staff writer at POLITICO and POLITICO Magazine. He is the recipient of the American Society of News Editors’ distinguished writing award, the Paul Hansell Award for Distinguished Achievement in Florida Journalism and other state, regional, and national honors. Anthologized in The Best American Newspaper Narratives and Next Wave: America’s New Generation of Great Literary Journalists, he’s at work on a book about the 2000 election. A native of the Boston area and a graduate of Davidson College, he lives in North Carolina with his wife, two daughters and three dogs.

About the book: Tommy Tomlinson was watching a dog show on television a few years ago when he had a sudden thought: Are those dogs happy? How about pet dogs—are they happy? Those questions sparked a quest to venture inside the dog-show world, in search of a deeper understanding of the relationship between dogs and humans that has endured for thousands of years. Dogland shares his surprising, entertaining, and moving adventures.
