300 Pairs of Sneakers, Our Recycling Effort Continues

by | May 28, 2024

Just some of the sneakers we have collected thus far.

Just over a month ago we announced a crazy idea to recycle old pairs of sneakers. More importantly, we noted that any proceeds from this effort would be donated to the Davidson Veterans Monument Fund. We had originally planned for Town Day to be our big collection day. Weather changed those plans.

However, with help from CrossFit Davidson, the Davidson Area Running Team (DART), and CSD Spartan 5k runners the cancellation of Town Day had minimal impact on our efforts.

Within the first two weeks we shipped off more than 200 pairs of sneakers. At the same time, we announced that we will keep collecting sneakers.

Sneaker recycling bins are currently located at Town Hall (inside the main entrance on South Street), CrossFit Davidson, and the Davidson Branch Library. We also have a bin in the Arts and Crafts Room at The Pines, for residents of The Pines only. We also benefitted from support from Davidson College scholar-athletes. Town Commissioner Ted Stauffer arranged to pick up some of their worn and gently-worn sneakers.

Today, less than a month into our program, we shipped another 10 bags at PostNet Davidson. This puts our collection total at more than 300 pairs of shoes. At the same time, we picked up another bin-full of shoes at the Davidson Branch Library.

As long as our partners will let us keep the bins in place, we will keep collecting them to keep them out of local landfills. We thank your for continuing to support our efforts.
