Celebrating AAPI Voices at Main Street Books
Dear Reader,
It’s hard to believe that the month of May will soon draw to a close. For students and parents of school-age kids, this means the closing of one chapter and moving onto the next. We’re already feeling the transition here in the store. Davidson College students wrapped up their spring semester a few weeks ago.
Though, before the month is out, there’s still much to celebrate. May marks Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. To highlight the month, we’ve pulled together a list of some of our favorite books by AAPI authors.
One of the most recent reads to make a splash on Main Street Books’ shelves is Real Americans by Rachel Khong. The author of Goodbye, Vitamin writes a story of race and the repercussions of harboring family secrets across three generations. Alternating between 9/11 era New York City and present day, Khong offers readers a genre-bending coming-of-age tale. This is already a favorite read of the year among booksellers.
In the wonderful world of YA, author Patricia Park dazzled us all with her release of What’s Eating Jackie Oh? The novel centers the life of Jackie, a Korean American teen who’s dream of becoming a professional chef lands her a spot on her favorite cooking show. Readers follow along as Jackie navigates her desire to cook, familial and cultural expectations, academic pressure, and increasing violence targeting the Asian community. It’s a book sure to make you both laugh and cry.
