by | Jun 13, 2024

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Derrick Spice has been named Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance at Davidson College, as announced Wednesday afternoon.

“I am incredibly grateful to Chris Clunie and Katy McNay for this amazing opportunity to serve as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at Davidson College,” Spice said. “I am excited about the direction of Davidson College Athletics and look forward to further developing relationships with administration, staff, coaches, scholar-athletes and the Davidson community.”

Spice fully transitions to an administrative role after previously serving as both an assistant coach with the men’s tennis program and Director of Compliance.

“I’m thrilled to add Derrick in a full-time capacity in our compliance office,” commented McNay, who serves as Associate A.D. for Compliance / SWA. “Working with Derrick over the last five years, he has honed his compliance skills and has added such value to our program. Going forward, as a full-time compliance staff member, I can’t wait to see all that he brings to our program, coaches, staff and scholar-athletes. Derrick will make Davidson Athletics better.”

In addition to his everyday roles in the compliance office, Spice will have other administrative responsibilities, including sport and game operations management, while working with McNay to liaise with the admissions and financial aid office as it relates to the strenuous admissions process, financial aid and scholarships as related to NCAA compliance.

Spice, who came to Davidson in 2016, was a standout tennis player at Wake Forest where he was named ACC Rookie of the Year in 2002 after setting a new school record for singles victories in a season. Climbing to as high as No. 17 in the national rankings, Spice was a three-time all-conference selection with the Demon Deacons.

From 2011-15, Spice was at Smith Stearns Tennis Academy as a tennis instructor for competitive juniors trying to play high-level college tennis.

Along with coaching and instructing at Smith Stearns, Spice was the Director of Junior Tennis at Five Seasons Sports Club in 2010-11, while instructing and teaching at North Ridgeville Racket Club (2007-2010) and Cleveland Racket Club (2001-03).

A native of Ohio, Spice graduated from Wake Forest in 2005 with a degree in communications. In 2020, he earned a master’s degree in education with a focus in athletic administration from Concordia University.
