We Did the Math Again
In 2021, the Davidson College Sports Information team shared a press release from the A-10 about the number of students listed on the A10 Honor Roll. We wrote an article then, and maintain the same today, that the raw numbers fail to acknowledge the size of the member institutions.
We updated the math in 2023 when a similar press release was issued and shared.
So, here we are again. Today, the A-10 published the 2024 version of the press release. Without reinventing the wheel, we did a quick check to see if there have been any dramatic changes in the number of students at the top 5 schools listed in the press release.
The A-10 press release only provides the raw numbers of how many made the list.
University of Massachusetts 370
Fordham 342
George Mason 327
Davidson 319
St. Joseph’s 315
The additional math that we did then, and again today, is fairly simple. We take the number of scholar-athletes on the “A-10 Honor Roll” press release and factor in the size of the overall student body at the respective colleges/universities. Here are the enrollment numbers for the top five schools.
University of Massachusetts 32,000
Fordham 16,986
George Mason 39,521
Davidson 1,927
St. Joseph’s 8,415
When you use the numbers of students on the honor roll and divide it by the student population, you get a very different picture. Davidson catapults from number four to number one, and has four times the percentage of the second closest school.
Davidson 16.55%
St. Joseph’s 4.01%
Fordham 2.01%
University of Massachusetts 1.16%
George Mason .83%
We stand by our decision to make this distinction. We still think it is important to highlight the number of scholar-athletes at Davidson College and to specifically recognize the 319 who made the Honor Roll.
Editor’s Note: the 32,000 number for UMass was in a press release announcing that they will be leaving the A-10 in July 2025 and joining the MAC.
