Unity in Community North Mecklenburg to Host a John Lewis Day of Action Rally and a Call on Congress To Protect Freedom to Vote

WE are America! OUR democracy, which is the gem of the world, is on the line. This is our time to stand up to ensure we have a democracy that is inclusive, robust, just and multi-racial for future generations.

With the ongoing attack on democracy, UiC’s John Lewis Day of Action Rally will highlight the urgency of this moment in our history. We will educate, motivate, and activate our community through guest speakers, song, music and spoken word to work toward the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, the Freedom to Vote Act, the Native American Voting Rights Act, and DC Statehood.

We must realize John Lewis’ Vision for Democracy. Unity in Community on the four-year mark of the passing of Rep. John Lewis, joining more than 80 events nationwide celebrating his extraordinary legacy.

“We are gathering to remember the impact of Rep. John Lewis and the need for Congress to take urgent action,” said Aurrita Payne, Unity in Community – North Mecklenburg president.

WHAT: John Lewis National Day of Commemoration and Action
WHO: Unity in Community’s event will include speakers from DemocracyNC, NAACP, VoteRiders, Rev. Jordan Boyd as well as Spoken Word Poetry, Singing, and Dancing
WHEN: 7-8:30 PM EST, Wednesday, July 17, 2024

This event is being hosted by Unity in Community – North Mecklenburg in partnership with the Declaration for American Democracy, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Black Voters Matter Fund, League of Women Voters, Transformative Justice Coalition, Public Citizen and dozens of other organizations as part of the John Lewis National Day of Commemoration and Action.

The rally will replace UiC’s quarterly July meeting. UiC is nonpartisan – any event we host is intended to educate and motivate each of us so that we can act on and vote on issues that are important to us.
