Local Girls Explored the World of Engineering and Science with Trane Technologies and Project Scientist
Local girls* ages 7-12 participating in a Summer STEAM Lab program led by Project Scientist walked through the world of STEM up-close on Wednesday at Trane Technologies.
Who: Project Scientist, an education nonprofit that offers summer and after-school programs in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) is leading a week-long Summer STEAM Lab on bioengineering for local girls from Devonshire Elementary School and Raise A Child of the Carolinas. This week’s lab also featured an interactive circus-themed IT Expedition hosted by Trane Technologies to introduce students to Generative AI, coding, and UI/UX design. Project Scientist’s Summer STEAM Lab is designed to encourage students to think boldly, to be curious, and create solutions for a better future using scientific thought.
When: Wednesday, July 17, 2024 9:45 am – 11:45 am ET
Where: Trane Technologies, Davidson
Jacki Lane—Project Scientist, Regional Programs Director
Mary Anne Faro—Trane Technologies, Enterprise Communications Generalist
Shaping Bioengineers: Through Project Scientist’s week-long Summer STEAM Lab, students will immerse themselves in the captivating field of bioengineering through hands-on activities, gaining a profound understanding of how bioengineering transforms lives. Activities include building DNA models, creating stethoscopes, exploring taste genetics through PTC taste experiments, and designing filtration devices to reduce exposure to harmful pollutants.
Circus-Themed IT Expedition: During an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Trane Technologies, students were introduced to an exciting array of IT-related activities on topics including Generative AI, coding, and UI/UX design to showcase the diverse and fascinating world of information technology and demonstrate that there is a place for everyone. Students also had the opportunity to meet women in STEM role models during the expedition.
Why: Women fill nearly half the jobs in the U.S. but hold only 26% of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Project Scientist inspires girls to become the next generation of STEM leaders, innovators, and disruptors – including engineers, scientists, technology innovators, or mathematicians– through a joyful STEM learning ecosystem supported by partners like Trane Technologies. Trane Technologies’ corporate citizenship strategy, Sustainable Futures, is designed to support young, under-represented learners. The company is investing $100 million and 500,000 employee volunteer hours by 2030 in programs that support this strategy.
