‘Cats Add Hashmi to Field Hockey Staff
Hamzah Hashmi, a U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper, is joining the Davidson field hockey staff as an assistant coach, head coach Zoe Almquist announced Monday.
Hashmi has been a USA Field Hockey Nexus coach since 2020, and he spent last season as an assistant coach at the University of Vermont.
“I am so excited that Hamzah has agreed to join the Davidson field hockey staff,” said Almquist. “Hamzah’s expertise as a goalkeeper, his ability to immediately read and dissect problems all across the field and his comfort in scouting tasks will immediately raise the level of our team. Hamzah’s coaching experience from Vermont, as well within the USA Field Hockey youth pathway, will also serve as valuable assets in a time of change for our program.”
Hashmi has climbed the ladder with USA Field Hockey, serving as the U.S. National Team goalkeeper since 2001. He also played for the Under-21 Junior National Team from 2011 to 2017 and was on the Under-18 Junior National Team in 2011.
“I am extremely excited to be joining the Wildcat program,” said Hashmi. “I am looking forward to working with the amazing coaching staff and players. Bringing my playing experience from the international stage as well as the coaching experience domestically, I am eager to contribute to the Davidson field hockey program for this 2024 season.”
In his playing career, Hashmi has competed in the Hockey5s World Cup (2024), the Three Nations Tournament (2023), the Four Nations Cup (2022, 2023) and the Pan-American Cup (2022). He was also a Sydney Premier League First Team pick in 2017-18 while at the University of New South Wales.
In coaching, beginning in 2019, Hashmi spent four years at Harvard-Westlake School in California, where he served as the junior varsity head coach and the all-program goalie coach. He also had a short stint as a volunteer goalkeeper coach at the University of California.
Hashmi is the second U.S. National Team member to coach with the Wildcats in recent years. Jenny Rizzo, an assistant coach in 2019 and 2021, is a goalkeeper on the Women’s National Team and is currently an alternate in the Paris Olympics.
