Take a Page From Nature
Dear Reader,
August is one of our favorite months in the bookstore. The days are long and warm, and still ripe with the prospect of adventure. Perhaps you’ll enjoy a late evening walk down the red bricks of Main Street or take a seat in the shade on the Village Green to devour one of your favorite new reads. Wherever you go, there are plenty of ways to get outside in nature to enjoy the last glimmers of summer in Davidson.
A few of our favorite local places to root ourselves in nature include The Emerald Necklace Trail, Abersham Park, and Fisher Farm. The Emerald Necklace Trail is a 13-mile trail system connecting the Greater Lake Norman area of Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson. If you’re observant, you’ll likely spot a Red-bellied woodpecker or an Eastern bluebird.
Abersham Park and Fisher Farm can be found just north of our store in Davidson. They are perhaps one of the best hidden jewels in our little community. The two parks are connected by a network of greenways. Combined, they span upwards of 600 acres of land that can be explored by bikers, walkers, and runners. Picnic tables and benches dot the land and are prime spots to root oneself in nature.
Main Street Books has a variety of books that can accompany you on your next local adventure. The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan is a gorgeous book of drawings and essays that catalogue the birds that inhabit Tan’s back yard. This book is sure to be a winner for anyone seeking quiet and mediation in our loudening world. And it’s back in stock!
The Tree Finder by May Theilgaard Watts offers readers another way to convene with the natural world. Theilgaard Watts, a celebrated ecologist, lends readers an easy-to-use guide to identify trees—a fun activity for adults and children using a dichotomous system of “yes or no” questions that lead you through pictures to your tree’s identity.
We’ve gathered a list of some of our bestselling nature books and picture books below. We hope you take some time to get outside and explore, and then come back into Main Street Books to tell us about it.
With cheer,
The Main Street Books Team
P.S. Davidson’s town Arborist labeled some of our larger trees with their stats, including their height and the amount of electrical energy savings they provide! Have you seen them around town?
