by | Aug 8, 2024

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Longtime throws coach, Bob Luciano, has joined the Davidson College track & field staff, as announced by Director of Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Jen Straub Thursday.

“We are excited to welcome Bob to the Davidson community,” commented Straub. “He will be a tremendous addition to our program. Along with great passion for the sport, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will only benefit us more.”

In addition to serving as an assistant coach for both Wildcat programs, Luciano will also handle the duties of recruiting coordinator for the women’s team.

“I am extremely thankful to be working at an elite academic school here at Davidson,” said Luciano. “I am excited for the opportunity to watch the athletes grow as people and athletes.”

With close to 30 years experience at the collegiate level, Luciano joins the Wildcats from Muhlenberg College where he spent the last two years leading the Mules’ throwers to drastic improvements and several accolades, including a two-time National qualifier and All-American in the javelin.

From 2018-21, Luciano took on the challenge of starting a throws program on the newly formed track & field team at Scranton University, which competes at the Division III level. Despite not having a home facility, Luciano’s throwers earned an impressive 46 team points at the 2021 Conference Championships, highlighted by four Top-10 showings.

Prior to his time at Scranton, he spent nine seasons as the javelin coach at Moravian College. While in Bethlehem, Pa., the 2012 USTFCCCA Mideast Assistant Male Coach of the Year had eight different throwers qualify for the Division III National Championships, including eventual champions Gary Zack (2011) and Mary Kate Duncan (2017). In addition, Luciano coached seven Greyhounds to All-American status.

Luciano’s collegiate coaching career began in 1993 at Lafayette College, where he also received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He would later earn his Master’s of Mathematics Education from DeSales University.

On the national level, he coached Andy Fahringer to a seventh-place finish in the javelin at the 2017 USATF Championships.

As a competitor, Luciano was the USATF 2008 Masters National Champion in the javelin.
