PROCLAMATION
HONORING THE DAVIDSON WILDCAT OLYMPIC MEDALISTS

WHEREAS, the connection between Davidson College and the Town goes all the way back to 1837, and a time when the Town was the Town of Davidson College; and

WHEREAS, Davidson College students are part of our community. Beyond being counted in our census data, students are involved in so many aspects of the life of our Town; and

WHEREAS, from July 26 until August 11 so many people across our Town and Nation were glued to their televisions, computer screens, and phones to watch the 2024 Paris Olympics; and

WHEREAS, two of the 592 Team USA athletes are Davidson Wildcats. Stephen Curry (Class of 2010) and Evy Leibfarth (Class of 2025) proudly wore the red, white, and blue of Team USA. It was Leibfarth’s second Olympics and Curry’s first; and

WHEREAS, qualifying as an Olympic athlete was amazing enough, both of our Davidson Wildcats earned positions on their respective podiums and won Olympic medals; and

WHEREAS, Evy Leibfarth qualified in three Olympic Sports: – Canoe Slalom, Kayak Slalom, and Kayak Cross – a sport making its first appearance in the Olympics in 2024; and

WHEREAS, she finished in 15th place in the Kayak Slalom and in 10th place Kayak Cross. The 20- year-old earned a Bronze Medal in the Canoe Slalom on July 31; and

WHEREAS, Stephen Curry has earned four NBA Championship rings and two MVP awards, he had made it be known that he was hoping to add an Olympic Medal to his collection; and

WHEREAS, in the semifinal game against Team Serbia Stephen Curry led Team USA – scoring 36 points; and

WHEREAS, Curry’s performance in that semifinal game was only a warmup for the Gold Medal game against France. While Team USA had a double-digit lead in the third quarter, that lead had dropped to a single possession in the closing minutes of the game. In the final 3 minutes Curry drained four of his eight 3-point shots – the final one termed a “Golden Dagger” by announcers. Curry and his fellow members of Team USA Men’s Basketball earned Gold on August 10, defeating France 98-87.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rusty Knox, Mayor of Davidson and the Board of Commissioners do hereby honor Evy Leibfarth and Stephen Curry for earning Olympic medals in Paris. You have been amazing ambassadors for your alma mater and our Town. Go ‘Cats!

Proclaimed this 13th day of August 2024.
Rusty Knox
