Invitation from the Deliberative Citizenship Initiative
Dear Davidson Family, Alums and Friends,
In this election year, it may feel even more difficult than ever to discuss important public issues with your fellow citizens. Fortunately, the Deliberative Citizenship Initiative (DCI) will continue hosting opportunities this fall for Davidson students, staff, faculty and members of our broader community to deliberate together about the contentious topics facing our nation and our world.
If you would like to connect with Davidson students and other Davidson
alums and family members and explore both our areas of agreement and disagreement, then we invite you to join one of the DCI’s upcoming programs!
Our Deliberative “D” Teams are small groups of Davidson students, alums and other members of our community who deliberate together about contentious topics in a small and private setting (either online or in-person).
- Our Fall 2024 D Teams will meet three times in October and November, and each meeting will explore the relationship between liberty, diversity and democracy through the lens of three specific topics – Campus Protests, Defensive Democracy Efforts, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Practices.
- Participants in these D Teams can make lasting intergenerational connections and talk in-depth with people who have a multitude of backgrounds and perspectives.
- D Team meetings are facilitated by our very own DCI Fellows, Davidson students who have been trained as deliberation facilitators.
- To learn more and register for a D Team, sign up here by Sept. 6.
The DCI is hosting its annual Deliberation Facilitator Training Program Workshop on Sept. 7 and 14 (in-person and online options available). If you’d like to learn how to facilitate difficult conversations about challenging issues facing our society, then consider registering for these two 4-hour sessions via this link.
The DCI’s Fall Deliberative Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. will focus on Income and Wealth Disparities: Should we address them, and if so, why and how? Stay tuned for more information about this event that will be coming soon.
Be sure to sign up on the DCI website and follow us on your favorite social media platform (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) for updates and more information about the DCI’s future programs and insights on how we can best engage with one another on the pressing issues of our time.
