Back-to-School with Bestsellers

Dear Reader,

The store is buzzing with the energy of students heading back to school. Our booksellers have loved seeing students coming into the store for books on their class reading lists and for their Battle of the Books teams. One family’s tradition is to choose a new back-to-school picture book to read together the night before school.

The newest Davidson Wildcats began arriving yesterday for today’s move-in, so we’ve been preaching about how the campus’s E. H. Little Library will purchase books selected by Davidson students for their Browsing Collection; just browse the bookstore, leave the selections at the register, and the college library will check out the books to the student as soon as they get them into their catalog.

A back-to-school themed book for young readers that has captured our hearts this year is The Yellow Bus by Loren Long. As a parent whose kids have been whisked away (and faithfully returned home) by that mysterious beast for the last ten years, I appreciate this utterly new perspective.

Long dazzles us once again with his vivid illustrations and reflective prose depicting new beginnings as the bus itself sees different drivers and ever changing student faces. The Yellow Bus finds joy in each stage of service. This is a classic in the making.

Back-to-school can also mean the return to difficult routines. While not strictly a school book, Bubble Gum Bison by Scott Rothman champions unconventional solutions. As someone whose life was changed when she realized she could simplify toddler mornings by putting her kids to bed in clean school clothes, I am here for unconventional solutions! Thank you Bison family.

Buses full of students also means that we are on the eve of the biggest season in publishing – fall. Stay tuned for a round up of our favorite fall releases. In the meantime, take a look at our current bestsellers.

Not sure what to pick up next? Our booksellers are also always eager to offer a personal recommendation. Come on by!

With cheer,

Adah & the Main Street Books Team
