Davidson Lands Conservancy Announces Ceremony to Recognize 100th Treasure Tree

by | Aug 25, 2024

Davidson Lands Conservancy recently announced its 100th Treasure Tree. The Treasure Tree Program identifies and catalogs remarkable trees throughout the community. These trees are large or physically unique specimens, rare trees, or trees of cultural or historical significance. The aim of the program is to locate, acknowledge, and recognize the outstanding trees in our area.

The program launched in 2020 and was patterned after the TreesCharlotte’s efforts with origins to the NC Champion Tree initiative. Recognizing the importance of trees, the DLC board and leadership, with support from a Davidson College intern, created this program to highlight outstanding trees in our area. In addition to their beauty, trees serve many purposes including: producing oxygen; sequestering carbon; filtering water; cleaning pollution from the air; and providing shade, habitat, shelter, and food for wildlife.

The Treasure Tree program in Davidson is made possible by the support and sponsorship of Trane Technologies. Scott Tew, DLC board member and VP of Sustainability and ESG, shared that “Trane Technologies is delighted to support the Treasure Tree program in support of Davidson’s beautiful canopy and the importance of trees to sustainable communities.”

The program features trees from across Davidson, including many beautiful oaks, hemlocks, pines, magnolias, maples, elms, cedars, ash, tulip poplars, persimmons, a live oak, and many more. The ages range all the way to an estimated 125 years, and one of the tallest is an Osage Orange that is over 140 feet tall.

“This program highlights the diversity and grandeur of trees in Davidson. With their unique history and longevity, these trees have cultural significance. The benefits, beauty, and resilience of our trees make them a treasure for our community,” said Beth Wytiaz, DLC Executive Director.

DLC is excited to announce that the 100th tree is a strong silver maple in the back parking lot of the Davidson United Methodist Church. Join us in celebrating the Treasure Tree program and recognizing this 100th milestone on Saturday, September 14 from 8:30 – 9:00 a.m., with a short ceremony to take place at 8:45 just before the Davidson Farmers Market opens. Coffee and locally baked goods will be available.
