Field Hockey Tops Towson 1-0

by | Sep 1, 2024

Wildcat team captain Macy Curtis scored the lone goal in the ‘Cats win over Towson.

DAVIDSON — Macy Curtis’ third-quarter goal was the difference in a 1-0 Davidson win over Towson in field hockey Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.

It’s the Wildcats’ first win of the season and came against a Tigers team that threatened throughout the second half.

“The last couple minutes were pretty nerve-wracking, but I have so much trust in our team and the back line,” said coach Zoe Almquist. “It was just a full-team effort.”

Curtis scored at the 9:28 mark of the third quarter, on a Sib Naaktgeboren assist, following a Towson penalty corner. After receiving the ball in front of the goal, Curtis spun to her right and found space around Towson keeper Tessa Scheenstra on the left side.

“The goal we scored … I always tell our team, if you do corner breakout right, it’s by the textbook,” said Almquist. “And that goal could be written in the textbook.”

Davidson finished with 15 shots, led by Naaktgeboren, who had six, including three shots-on-goal. Curtis and Pompeo had two shots-on-goal apiece.

Goalie MaryKate Berg notched her first win and shutout. She made three saves and led the defensive charge against six Towson corners. The Tigers also had a second-half shot hit the crossbar.
