Women’s Soccer Blanks Gardner-Webb 2-0
DAVIDSON – The Davidson women’s soccer team remained undefeated at Alumni Stadium to open the 2024 season as it claimed a 2-0 shutout win over Gardner-Webb Sunday.
“This was a strong week for us back at Alumni Stadium,” said head coach Riley Piechnick. “We set a goal to have an undefeated home-opening weekend and were able to accomplish that. Our solid defensive performance led to a shutout today, and we’ve been doing a great job creating opportunities in the attacking third. Maddie Moody stepped up big time to put a couple of those away from quality crosses. We continue to improve with each game and are excited to get back to work this week for another couple of home games.”
The win improves the Wildcats’ record to 2-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 on its own field, with three consecutive home matches on the schedule next.
Davidson’s offense was led by freshman Sophia Whiddon who in 52 minutes of action, tallied her first collegiate goal and assist while placing both of her shots from the match on target.
Aiding in the offensive efforts was senior forward Maddie Moody who netted her second goal of the week on an identical header from her first score this season.
Fellow freshman Charlotte Hansen also put her name on the scores sheet for the first time this season, dishing out an assist to Whiddon in addition to taking two shots of her own, one being on goal.
The ‘Cats dominated possession throughout the entirety of the match, while in turn standing solid on defense and holding the Running Bulldogs to just three total shots.
In her first shutout victory of the season, Emily Smith took the win for Davidson after making two saves over 90 minutes in goal.
The Wildcats finished the match with advantages is total shots (18-3), shots on goal (5-2) and corner kicks (6-1).

Davidson will continue its stretch of home matches when it faces Longwood 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at Alumni Stadium.
