Come enjoy Lake Davidson on the watercraft of your choice: single or double kayak, paddle board or canoe! Meet our staff to rent your watercraft at the Nature Preserve behind Davidson Day School on Jetton Street and have fun on a self-guided paddling adventure. Watercraft will be available on Saturdays from 2- 5 p.m. Register to reserve your watercraft of choice. Please arrive between 2 and 2:30 p.m. and boats must be ported by 5 p.m.

Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He will speak on culture and civic life, followed by a moderated conversation with President Doug Hicks, in the Duke Family Performance Hall at Davidson College. Reserve a free ticket. This class is intended for people who already have a background in French language, at an intermediate or advanced level. Practice your French speaking and listening skills in a relaxed group environment. No lectures, just conversation!

We will talk about various topics, including art, civilization, culture, sports, sociology, nature, and talk about the many aspects of daily life in France and other French-speaking countries. It will be a time of sharing ideas, dreams, past experiences, and much more. There will usually be a light preparation at home such as reading a short newspaper or magazine article, watching a you-tube video, etc. as a starting point for our discussion. We will also have plenty of time for informal and spontaneous conversation. Requirements: 16 years old or older, French fluency at an intermediate or advanced level. Registration suggested but not required.

Francophone Film Series Presents: Saint Omer

Saint Omer court of law. Young novelist Rama attends the trial of Laurence Coly, a young woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach in northern France. But as the trial continues, the words of the accused and witness testimonies will shake Rama’s convictions and call into question our own judgement.

Rafiq Jordan Nabali is an award-winning filmmaker and the founder of Byrdie Productions Inc. a film company dedicated to telling powerful Black stories. Jordan’s upbringing and experiences traveling the world have shaped his ability to approach stories from unique perspectives. Most recently, he wrote and directed the feature documentary “Let the Church Say ” (2022) which explored the historical impact of the Black American church and posed a daunting question: Is the Black church dead? He is currently in the development of several projects including “Where the Red Line Ends” an innovative docu-series about the history of Redlining and its impact on Black generational wealth. Jordan desires to provide candid creative glimpses of the Black experience, in ways that anyone from any background can empathize.

Gallery: Artist Tyler Starr – Tales of the Future

Join us for the opening reception of Tyler Starr’s solo exhibition, Tales of the Future. Combining research, direct observation, and poetic associations, Starr’s mixed media works and artists books often rely on cross-references to better understand current social and political conundrums. Tales of the Future features a new comic-style artist book of the same name, two additional artist books, Flags, Placards, and Illicit Climbers of the Capitol Insurrection (January 6, 2021), Bank Tellers of America versus The Aryan Republican Army (1992-1996), and recent related digital prints and photogravures.
