Main Street Books – The Kids’ Issue

by | Sep 12, 2024

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the kids issue! We all know that a child’s interests can vary from week to week, straying from a pledged love of all things dinosaurs one week, to an intense fixation on outer space the next. Luckily, we have books and events to feed even their wildest and most wonderful curiosities.

Our booksellers are always ready to channel their inner Kathleen Kelly to help young readers find their next favorite book. (Give us a shout if you caught that “You’ve Got Mail” reference).

We’d hoped to kick off our events this month with story time and a book party celebrating Ashley Belote’s latest picture book, Sheepwrecked. Belote, also the author of Witch & Wombat, returns with a comedic tale of a motley crew of sheep pirates journeying home with treasure.

With rain in the forecast this weekend, we are POSTPONING this event until October. We will send an update very soon!

With the first presidential debate in the books, pop into the store to see some of the newest election season books we have for young readers. Speaking of America by Jared Cohen and Vivian Shih debuted on Tuesday, and is a great read for children ages eight and up seeking to learn more about former presidents. This is the perfect book for any child who is fascinated by public speaking and presidential quotes.

For adults stopping into the store to pick up Ketanji Brown Jackson’s newly released biography, Lovely One, consider also grabbing the related picture book for young readers. Ketanji Brown Jackson: A Justice For All by Tammi Charles and Jemma Skidmore is a beautifully illustrated picture book about the first Black woman appointed to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Last, scroll down for our curated lists of kids’ books. We’ve got more picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, and middle grade reads.

Need a suggestion for the young readers in your life? Stop by the store. Our booksellers are happy to help even the littlest readers discover what books set their world aflame!

With cheer,

The Main Street Books Team

The Most Boring Book Ever is the inventive, imaginative celebration of everyday life that you’d hope and expect from this duo of legendary writers. Bookie & Cookie cleverly plays with the pages of the book as a part of this story about best friends navigating a disagreement. At Our Table is a fresh and inclusive story about gratitude from a Chickasaw illustrator.

Knight Owl was a runaway favorite here at Main Street Books. Knight Owl and Early Bird celebrates unlikely friendship. Hank Goes Honk is about one rude goose whose friends help him feel his feelings while also being considerate. The Spark in Me celebrates curiosity; part family story and part Physics handbook!

Impossible Creatures is a must-read British sensation. Favorite Raleigh author Reintgen launches a new series with The Last Dragon on Mars. Millicent Quibb is a new favorite character that two shop kids have read and adored.

Big Nate Remains Calm is a fantastic pick for fans of Wimpy Kid. The First Cat in Space ate pizza. Then it slurped the soup of doom. In book three, First Cat in Space and the Wrath of the Paperclip, we meet an evil AI paper clip named CheckMate. Did you know that Mac & Shawn have recorded wacky songs for each book? Check out their ear worms here. In Taxi Ghost, puberty delivers the ability to see ghosts and Adele’s new spectral friends deliver the antics she needs to spice up her boring winter break.
