Founded in 2016 by Hank Willis Thomas, Eric Gottesman, and Michelle Woo, For Freedoms does not overtly support any specific party or candidate but instead works with artists and organizations to center the voices of artists in public discourse, expand what participation in democracy looks like, and reshape conversations about politics. To participate in the Lawn Activation, find us around campus and create your own sign that will be added to a larger campus display. Everyone has an investment or interpretation of what freedom means. Your participation will help us better understand what issues are important to our campus and community, and what freedom means in the 21st century.

Okasha El Daly, “The reception of ancient Egypt in the medieval Muslim world”

Sept 17 @ 7:30 p.m.

Visual Arts Center (VAC) – 117 Semans Lecture Hall

In this lecture, Egyptian archaeologist Okasha El Daly fills a gap of about a thousand years in the history of Egyptology. Contrary to the prevailing view that the conversion of Egyptians first to Christianity and then Islam ended interest in their own heritage, they continued to study their own past with great pride. Many medieval Arab scholars visited Egypt to study its heritage and ancient scripts. This interest in ancient Egyptian scripts led to many scholarly attempts to decipher them. Here is a brief study of the motivations behind their interest and the degrees of their success in the decipherment and understanding of ancient Egypt. Nearly all the writers interested in Egyptian hieroglyphs were alchemists; many were also called Sufis or Mystics (for example, Jabir, Dhu Al-Nun, and Ibn Waḥshiyah).  The fame of Egypt as the land of science, wisdom, and mysticism created a welcoming environment for the reception of ancient Egyptian thought and arts among medieval Muslim scholars and the general public.

DavidsonLearns Presents Friendships and Well-Being Across the Lifespan

Sept 18 @ 1:00 p.m.

Town Hall and Community Center – 251 South Street

In this Spotlight Event, we will explore many facets of one of the most valued aspects of our lives – the friendships we have with others. Friendships and peer relationships have been a topic of interest for centuries and across many disciplines, including philosophy, religion, literature, and psychology. These relationships bring us pleasure as well as pain, and they occupy our thoughts, at times more than we would like. We will take a life-span perspective on friendships and focus on how research in psychology can help us ask and answer questions about these social bonds, including how friendships develop, how they affect us, and how they vary from person to person.
