Melissa Ohlman-Roberge saw Hadestown in its first inception at New York Theatre Workshop. “My oldest daughter was working wardrobe on the show, so it had special meaning,” recalls Ohlman-Roberge, Community School of Davidson’s upper school theatre arts educator/director. Later she saw the show on Broadway when Charlotte’s own Eva Noblezada starred as Eurydice. It’s been on her bucket list to direct ever since, and this month she gets her chance, as Community School of Davidson presents “Hadestown The School Version.”

As the holiday season approaches, one of the most acclaimed plays in recent memory arrives to remind us that family gatherings aren’t always easy. In The Humans, Stephen Karam documents the distinctly present-day Blake clan as a symbol of the disappearing middle class, with millennial children facing struggles their parents never faced while the parents also witness their promised safety vanish before them. Bound by love but consumed by a gnawing sense of dread, the Blakes meet for Thanksgiving dinner in New York City at one of their greatest moments of crisis.

Repairing Our Social Fabric One Creative Conversation At a Time
Sept 30 @ 5:30 p.m.
Lilly Family Gallery – Chambers
In a deeply polarized country, one of the greatest and hardest acts of civic engagement is talking to people who don’t share our beliefs. But that’s exactly what we need to do if we want to solve the social and political problems our country faces and if we want to create a society in which everyone flourishes. Strengthening our social bonds happens when we begin to care about each other again, when we are in relationship with one another. That begins with a conversation. Social artist, cultural strategist, and curator Philippa Pham Hughes will share what she has learned from organizing such conversations since December 2016. She applies relational thinking, practical experience, and social science-based research to design space that invites honesty, curiosity, and understanding. She will share the ways in which she uses multi-media arts and culture as tools to spark and frame difficult dialogues.
Sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement and the Van Every/Smith Galleries

She creates a graveyard for manuscript drafts and revisions and the characters whose lives she tried and failed to bring to life and who still haunt her. Alma wants her characters to rest in peace, but they have other ideas, and the cemetery becomes a mysterious sanctuary for their true narratives.”
