Town Activates Emergency Operations Center

by | Sep 26, 2024

The Town has activated the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) based on the National Weather Service’s issuance of a Tropical Storm Warning, and the potential for locally severe weather. The EOC will remain operational until further notice.

The EOC pulls Town first responders, public works, and administrative staff together in one location to create and maintain the “big picture” of what is going on across the Town.

The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning for Mecklenburg County.

For all NON-EMERGENCY concerns (such as a tree in the road, etc.), please contact the EOC directly by phone at 704-940-9643. This will help reduce congestion for emergency dispatch. For all emergencies, please still call 911 directly.

Tropical storm-force winds are expected somewhere within this area within the next 36 hours. Patio furniture, yard ornaments and plant containers can turn into projectiles in the event of high winds, which can damage your home, your neighbor’s home or can injure someone. Bring them inside or secure them to the ground so they don’t go airborne.

Important Reminders from Local Energy Providers

With forecasts calling for gusting winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding in local areas, Duke Energy and Energy United are preparing to respond to possible power outages.

Duke Energy and Energy United have service crew workers, line technicians and other storm personnel available to respond to power outages that may occur this weekend.

  • Ensure an adequate supply of flashlights, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable foods, medicines, etc., as well as the availability of a portable, battery-operated radio, TV or weather radio. Make sure your mobile devices and computers are fully charged. Charge your charging packs for these as well.
  • Stay away from power lines that have fallen or are sagging. Consider all lines energized as well as trees or limbs in contact with lines. Please report downed power lines to Duke Energy/Energy United or local emergency services.
  • If you use a generator due to a power outage, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure safe and proper operation. Operate your generator outside; never operate it inside a building or garage.
  • Don’t use grills or other outdoor appliances or equipment indoors for space heating or cooking, as these devices may omit carbon monoxide.
  • Customers should make alternate shelter arrangements as needed if you will be significantly impacted by a loss of power – especially families who have special medical needs or elderly members.
