Women’s Soccer Downs Saint Joseph’s 2-0
DAVIDSON – The Davidson women’s soccer team earned its first Atlantic 10 victory of the season in a 2-0 win against Saint Joseph’s Sunday inside Alumni Stadium.
“Big win today,” said head coach Riley Piechnick. “After a tough start in the first few conference games, the primary focus going into today was scoring and not taking a single minute off. We accomplished both with a strong defensive performance and capitalizing on a couple scoring opportunities. There was fun and high energy from the whole team throughout the match. I’m lucky and proud to lead a group that never quits. We hope to make this a pivotal turning point in the conference and gain momentum for the next game.”
The conference win improves the Wildcats’ overall record to 5-5-2 while its A-10 mark becomes 1-3. Additionally, The ‘Cats continue to show its strength on its home field, holding a 4-1-2 record in Alumni Stadium, including three shutout victories on 1992 Team Field.
Davidson’s leading scorer Maddie Moody added onto her season’s total netting her sixth goal of the season. Moody took advantage of a double assist from Sophia Whiddon to Kialie Hudson in just the fourth minute of the contest to put the ‘Cats ahead early.
The Wildcats and Hawks played an even remaining 41 minutes of the first half with Davidson holding a slight lead in shots (4-3). The second half proved to shut the door on Saint Joseph’s when Whiddon made a steal to stop a Hawks counter before placing a long shot past Katie Cappelletti in the 66th minute.
The Davidson defense sealed the deal preventing the Hawks from landing any second half shots on target.
Within the conference, the Wildcats as a team are tied for 5th in scoring and tied for sixth in goals allowed. Individually, Moody is seventh in goals (6) and ninth in points (12) while Whiddon is tied for sixth in assists (4). Emily Smith who earned her fifth win in goal this year, is 10th in goals against average (1.09), tied for eighth in shutouts (3), sixth in saves (44) and ninth in save percentage (.772).
Davidson will continue conference competition when it travels to Olean, New York Oct. 3 to face St. Bonaventure in a 5 p.m. kick off.
