  • With the victory, Head Coach Scott Abell tied William Younger (1923-31) for the most coaching wins in program history with 44.

  • In his first career start at quarterback, sophomore Andrew Frazier finished the night 8-of-10 passing for 159 yards and three touchdowns (2 rush, 1 pass).
  • Frazier was the fourth different starting signal caller in as many contests for the Wildcats this fall.
  • Davidson, which scored on three plays of 60 yards or more, got 128 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown from Mari Adams, while backfield mate Mason Sheron had 11 carries for 93 yards and two scores.
  • The ‘Cats biggest play came from junior cornerback TJ Magee, who had a school-record 98-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter.
  • Adams, a member of the 2024 Walter Payton Watch List, leads the conference in rushing yards (510), yards per carry (8.2) and yards per game (127.5), while ranking second behind Sheron (7) in touchdowns.

  • In addition to Head Coach Scott Abell tying the school record for wins, Davidson retained the 1919 Cup with a 48-37 victory over Presbyterian in the fourth annual Carolina Border Clash Sunday evening.
  • The Wildcats, now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Pioneer Football League, scored on three plays of 60 yards or more, while defeating Presbyterian (2-3, 0-1) for the fourth straight time.
  • In just seven seasons at the helm of the Wildcats, Abell ties William Younger (1923-31) for the most coaching wins in program history with 44.
  • Davidson, which led 35-13 at the half, scored the first 21 points of the game, highlighted by a school-record 98-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior cornerback TJ Magee with 8:31 left in the second quarter.
  • Making his first career start at quarterback for the Wildcats, Andrew Frazier put the ‘Cats on the board by capping a 12-play, 70-yard opening drive with a 16-yard scamper.
  • Frazier, who finished the night 8-of-10 passing for 159 yards and ran for two touchdowns. His 60-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Maione made it 35-6 with 2:52 left in the first half.
  • After Presbyterian made it a two-score game with 19 straight points, Davidson responded with another explosive play, this time a 63-yard run from Mari Adams to go up, 42-25. Adams finished with 16 carries for 128 yards, while backfield mate Mason Sheron had 11 carries for 93 yards and two scores.
  • Julian Rawlins led the defense with 10 tackles, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss.
  • Sunday’s game was originally scheduled to be played in Clinton, S.C., on Saturday, but was moved to Davidson as a result of Hurricane Helene.

LAST MEETING | DAVIDSON 49, MARIST 21 — SEPT. 16, 2023 |POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.

  • In just his second career start, Davidson’s Coulter Cleland completed 17-of-21 passes for 303 yards to go along with five touchdown throws, as the Wildcats cruised past Marist, 49-21, in PFL action at Tenney Stadium.
  • A sophomore from Racine, Ohio, Cleland becomes the first Davidson quarterback to throw for over 300 yards in a game since 2014 and just the fourth in program history with five touchdown passes in a game.
  • Offensively, the ‘Cats’ balanced attack totaled 514 yards, including 209 on the ground. Mason Sheron led the way with 92 yards on 10 carries, while classmate Mari Adams had 86.
  • In addition to limiting Marist to just 22 rushing yards, Davidson’s defense forced two turnovers, recorded four sacks and eight quarterback hurries.
  • After the Red Foxes evened the score 7-7 early in the second quarter, Cleland and the ‘Cats broke the game open with touchdowns on three consecutive drives to take a 28-7 lead into the half.
  • Jaleel Sales put Davidson in front for good with his first career touchdown, an 18-yard catch and run across the middle. Cleland also connected with Brody Reina for 41 yards down the far sideline and Maxwell Weaver on a 30-yard toss just prior to intermission.
  • Davidson’s Aaron Maione put the first points on the board for either team when he took a toss 31 yards late in the opening quarter.
  • The Wildcats carried their momentum into the third quarter as Cleland found his tight end Christian Berry wide open for a 20-yard touchdown reception to all but put the game out of reach.
  • Adams and his backfield mate Sheron also added touchdown runs of six and 32 yards, respectively, for Davidson.

  • Davidson will travel to Ohio next weekend for a noon kick off at Dayton, Saturday, Sept. 12.
