As the holiday season approaches, one of the most acclaimed plays in recent memory arrives to remind us that family gatherings aren’t always easy. In The Humans, Stephen Karam documents the distinctly present-day Blake clan as a symbol of the disappearing middle class, with millennial children facing struggles their parents never faced while the parents also witness their promised safety vanish before them. Bound by love but consumed by a gnawing sense of dread, the Blakes meet for Thanksgiving dinner in New York City at one of their greatest moments of crisis. Winner of the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play. Recommended ages 15 and up

The bees are buzzing, the birds are singing, and that means it’s time for Family Opera! Join us Saturday, October 5th at 10:30 PM for Opera Carolina’s free family performance of A Busy Bee. Together we will meet Bella the honeybee who is searching for her place in her bee community. Is she a nurse bee, a cleaning bee, or perhaps a drone bee protecting the hive? Bella struggles with each job and feels discouraged. Then she meets Queen Camille who shares that everyone has a special purpose and a job only they can do. Encouraged, Bella works with her friends and discovers that she loves being a flower bee! This will be an outdoor performance, so please feel free to bring a chair or blanket to sit on.

Come enjoy Lake Davidson on the watercraft of your choice: single or double kayak, paddle board or canoe! Meet our staff to rent your watercraft at the Nature Preserve behind Davidson Day School on Jetton Street and have fun on a self-guided paddling adventure. Watercraft will be available on Saturdays from 2- 5 p.m. Register to reserve your watercraft of choice. Please arrive between 2 and 2:30 p.m. and boats must be ported by 5 p.m.

The Town’s Concerts @ the Circles concert series take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month on Jetton Street near Clean Juice (605 D, Jetton St). An acoustic artist will perform from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. with the headline artists (below) playing from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The entire block of Jetton Street will be closed from 12:00 p.m. (noon) – 10:00 p.m. on evenings when a concert is being held.

Practice your French speaking and listening skills in a relaxed group environment. No lectures, just conversation! We will talk about various topics, including art, civilization, culture, sports, sociology, nature, and talk about the many aspects of daily life in France and other French-speaking countries. It will be a time of sharing ideas, dreams, past experiences, and much more. There will usually be a light preparation at home such as reading a short newspaper or magazine article, watching a you-tube video, etc. as a starting point for our discussion. We will also have plenty of time for informal and spontaneous conversation.
Requirements: 16 years old or older, French fluency at an intermediate or advanced level.
