Meet our staff to rent your watercraft at the Nature Preserve behind Davidson Day School on Jetton Street and have fun on a self-guided paddling adventure. Watercraft will be available on Saturdays from 2- 5 p.m. Register to reserve your watercraft of choice. Please arrive between 2 and 2:30 p.m. and boats must be ported by 5 p.m.

A conversation with Egyptian ceramicist, Ibrahim Said and Dr. Lyla Halsted, Assistant Professor of Art History.  The Van Every/Smith Galleries acquired one of Said’s works as part of the Spring Collecting Art course, selected by students.  Said will be here to discuss the inspirations for his work, some of which draw from medieval Islamic visual culture.  Supported with funds from the Bacca Foundation Visiting Scholar and Artist Program, Arab Studies, Art Department, and the Van Every / Smith Galleries.

History’s Lester Lecture: Dr. Zachary Sell, “Terrible Convergence: U.S. Settler Slavery and Colonial Rule in South Asia”

Sponsored by the History Department, this year’s Lester Lecture presents “Terrible Convergence: U.S. Settler Slavery and Colonial Rule in South Asia” by guest speaker, Dr. Zachary Sell, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Professor Sell is a historian of slavery with an emphasis upon colonialism and capitalism in the nineteenth century. He is the author of the award-winning book Trouble of the World: Slavery and Empire in the Age of Capital which examines how U.S. slavery intersected with British colonial projects ranging from Australia, Belize, and India. He is also engaged in collaborative public humanities scholarship and was previously at Brown University’s Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice (CSSJ) where he coordinated a collaboration between Firelight Films and CSSJ in support of a PBS documentary film series on the Atlantic slave trade directed by Stanley Nelson.

Practice your French speaking and listening skills in a relaxed group environment. No lectures, just conversation! We will talk about various topics, including art, civilization, culture, sports, sociology, nature, and talk about the many aspects of daily life in France and other French-speaking countries. It will be a time of sharing ideas, dreams, past experiences, and much more. There will usually be a light preparation at home such as reading a short newspaper or magazine article, watching a you-tube video, etc. as a starting point for our discussion. We will also have plenty of time for informal and spontaneous conversation. Requirements: 16 years old or older, French fluency at an intermediate or advanced level. Registration suggested but not required.

Francophone Film Series Presents: Antigone

A contemporary adaptation of the classic Greek tragedy, Sophie Deraspe’s Antigone (Nahéma Ricci) is a brilliant and resolute 16-year-old Algerian-born woman in Montreal willing to sacrifice everything she has built to save one of her brothers, who has turned to crime, from deportation. Deraspe employs the universal story as a bold, elegant backdrop to an incisive critique of present-day racism and the justice system’s underlying codes while using explosive narrative methods to build tension and emotional load and climactic showdowns. As Antigone devises and acts out her outrageous plan to save her brother, a social media frenzy carries her quest from an act to a movement. Antigone is a cri-du-coeur that swings big and hits at every turn, and an unabashedly emotional film to contrast some of the quieter approaches in this series. Ricci gives a staggering performance and carries an undeniable emotional charge, and Deraspe establishes herself as one of the most interesting filmmakers of recent years. Francophone Film Series

We want to be your school aged child’s reading buddy! Sign up your school aged child for a 30-minute reading buddy session to share in the joy and power of reading. Library volunteers read aloud favorite books by asking questions, building vocabulary, and connecting to your child’s world. This semester will begin September 18 – December 18. Sessions are available Wednesdays from 4pm-6pm. Children register for a weekly reading buddy time for the entire semester! Sessions are offered on a first come, first serve basis. Come join us at the Davidson branch for an afternoon of smoothies made with ingredients pollinated by bats as we learn about all about our flying friends and bat conservation. Teens will explore chemistry as seen in cooking, one of the oldest and most widespread uses of applied chemistry. Learn about which species live in our state and get some hands on experience with blending your very own drink courtesy of bats, of course! Also come for fun and relaxing bat coloring pages and more! Registration is required so we have adequate amounts of ingredients for everyone. This program will be provided by Davidson library staff, and is recommended for teens and preteens ages 9 to 18.
