DAVIDSON, N.C. — Scott Abell, Davidson’s all-time winningest football coach, has resigned to accept the head coaching position at Rice University as announced Tuesday morning.

Coach Abell (far right) led his team on and off the field – such as his support for the Room in the Inn program.

“We are sad about Scott’s departure but incredibly grateful for his time here at Davidson College,” commented Director of Athletics Chris Clunie. “In just seven years, Scott transformed the football program, doing so with the highest standards of excellence both on and off the field. We wish Crissie and him nothing but the best in their next chapter. And we are absolutely committed to moving forward and writing the next great chapter for Davidson College Football.”

Abell, who just completed his seventh season at the helm, guided the Cats to a 47-28 overall record, 35-18 conference mark, a school-record seven straight winning campaigns, two Pioneer Football League championships and three FCS Playoff appearances, while twice earning conference Coach of the Year honors.

“I am so grateful for Davidson College, President Doug Hicks, former President Carol Quillen and Director of Athletics Chris Clunie,” Abell said. “The support and love they and the entire Davidson community provided over these past seven years, is something my family and I could never repay. I’m incredibly proud of what our staff and teams have built and accomplished. Though my time here has come to an end, Davidson Football is stronger than ever.”

“Lastly, thank you to all the players, their families and alumni that have touched my life through Davidson Football. I am and will forever be grateful for our time together.”

In addition to Davidson leading the nation in rushing six of the last seven seasons, Abell’s .626 winning percentage is also the best in school history.

Under Abell’s leadership, the ‘Cats have earned 44 all-conference honors with 39 more receiving honorable-mention recognition.

Associate head coach Jon Berlin has been named interim head coach. A national search for a new head football coach will begin immediately.
