Hummel Wins Libero of the Year; Five ‘Cats Honored with Postseason Awards
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Davidson junior Jordan Hummel captured the Atlantic 10’s Libero of the Year award, while four other Wildcats earned All-Conference honors, the league office announced Friday morning.
Hummel’s distinction is the first of her career, while it marks the fourth consecutive season in which a Davidson Wildcat has been named the league’s top libero.
Additionally, senior Isabel Decker was selected as a First Team All-Conference pick, while Meile Songaila and Kinsey Smith were named to the All-Rookie Team. For a combination of her athletic and academic achievements, Kayla Davis was recognized on the conference’s All-Academic squad.
Leading a Wildcat team that won 15 matches this season, Hummel picked up 497 digs and averaged 4.48 digs per set. Her digs total ranks 39th nationally heading into the postseason, while she collected a career-high 29 digs against George Washington in early October, the most of any player in an Atlantic 10 match this season. From the end line, her 42 service aces are also tied for third-most in the league, which ranks 60th in the nation. She has also dished 124 assists in Davidson’s secondary.
A four-year starting outside hitter and senior captain, Decker eclipsed the 1,000-kills mark this season and ended the regular season with 1,077 career kills. With 331 this season, she ranks fifth in the A-10 and fourth in kills per set (3.6). Averaging 4.04 points per set, Decker also ranks as a top-5 scorer in the league, while picking up 251 digs, 14 double-doubles and six games with 20 kills or more.
The All-Rookie selections of Smith and Songaila mark the fourth straight season where the ‘Cats have landed freshmen honorees. Songaila, an outside hitter out of Kings Mountain, N.C., recorded 160 kills in 21 matches this year. The attacker also had nine games with double-digit kills and averaged 2.67 points per set, the third-most on the Wildcats’ roster. Smith, a staple in Davidson’s offense from day one, dished 623 assists in her debut season. With the fourth-most assists in the conference, she has appeared in every set for the ‘Cats this season, recorded 27 matches with double-digit assists and recorded 20-plus assists in 18 games. With a career-high 33 assists during non-conference play, Smith also capped off the regular season with four double-doubles and 176 total digs.
In 78 career matches, Davis has recorded 415 kills and 224 total blocks en route to an All-Academic honor in her final season. A three-year member of the Wildcats’ team, Davis is graduating Davidson a year early with a degree in biology. A 2022 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie member, Davis has notched 94 kills in just 15 matches this season, while also picking up 29 total blocks and averaging 1.74 kills per set. A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team, the Black Femmes of Davidson Treasurer and a Black Student Coalition member, Davis had a career-high 14 kills against Duquesne earlier this season and has recorded 10 multi-block performances.
