Giving Tuesday – Please Keep News of Davidson in Mind

by | Nov 28, 2024

No doubt you have heard of Black Friday, the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. Most of you are likely old enough to remember times before there was such a thing. Turns out that Black Friday really started becoming “a thing” in the 1990s. Some retail outlets added to the hype by opening their stores at 12:01 a.m., and shoppers showed up and they shopped.

Chances are you have been receiving Black Friday sales offers since Veterans Day. Before we go too far down the rabbit hole of Black Friday, lets shift gears to Giving Tuesday.

This year, Tuesday, December 3, 2024, is Giving Tuesday.

First established in 2012, Giving Tuesday offers an annual reminder of the importance of philanthropy, particularly as we move fully into a season of giving to family and friends, and to those we have never met and likely never will. It is intended to be a counterbalance to the consumerism of Black Friday.

Given that Davidson is home to so many amazing nonprofits, News of Davidson is likely not the only local nonprofit that will remind you that Giving Tuesday is a great day to make a gift. However, we would like to point out how we are different.

News of Davidson continues to amplify the needs and the news of nonprofits in our community. Most of these small organizations cannot afford a public relations staff while still having important messages to share with our community. We love to tell their stories, announce their events, and celebrate their successes.

When you support News of Davidson, you are helping all those other nonprofits too.

The all-volunteer News of Davidson team is asking you to directly support our central role as the only free, open, amplifying voice for our local nonprofits who seek to provide such basic necessities as shelter, nourishment, education, and healthcare for those in need. We are a great source of local news, as well as a great consolidated source of information about those who enrich our culture with the arts, not to mention a little bit of sports too.
