Women’s Basketball Heads South For Fort Myers Tip-Off

DAVIDSON – The Davidson women’s basketball team will head to Florida over the Thanksgiving break to participate in the Fort Myers Tip-Off for its next two contests beginning on Friday, Nov. 29.

SERIES HISTORY…
The Hokies lead the all-time series over Davidson 3-0 dating back to the first meeting on Dec. 30, 2004 in Blacksburg, Va. Friday’s contest will be the first meeting not hosted by the Hokies. 

Most recently, the two teams met on Nov. 9 2021 where Virginia Tech earned a 76-57 home victory over the Wildcats. After a hot-shooting first quarter from the No. 24 Virginia Tech Hokies, the Davidson Wildcats struggled to complete the opening night comeback. 

Overall, Adelaide Fuller led the ‘Cats with 15 points (6-of-11 shooting) and grabbed four rebounds, while fellow junior Cameron Tabor ended the night with nine points. Chloe Welch led Davidson in rebounds with 10 boards, just one shy of her career high. In total, six Wildcats recorded their first career points in a Davidson uniform.

LAST TIME OUT…
Davidson split the weekend 1-1 by picking up a dominant 81-39 home victory over Presbyterian after a close 60-55 loss on the road at Wake Forest Sunday and Saturday respectively.

Three players ended the competition in double figures for the ‘Cats in Candice Lienafa (13) Mallorie Haines (12) and Emilie Bessell (11). Lienafa earned her third start of the year and third game in double-digit scoring after coming off of her first A-10 Rookie of the Week accolades. Fellow freshmen Bessell, tallied a career-high night over 18 minutes of action. Additionally, Haines brought in a game-high six rebounds. 

WILDCAT REPORT…
Entering the weekend, Lienafa leads the ‘Cats roster in scoring with 11.0 ppg while shooting .619 from the field and .500 from 3-point range. Following in scoring is sophomore guard Katie Donovan who scores 9.2 ppg to go along with 5.5 rpg. Millie Prior paces the team defensively with 8.3 rpg and 1.5 bpg.

FRESHMEN FITTING IN FINE…
Lienafa has had her freshman efforts noticed by being named an Atlantic 10 Rookie of the week, all the while leading the Davidson offense through six games and making three starts. Additionally, Lienafa has tallied three double figure games including a season best 18 points at Cincinnati. 

Kyra Bruyndoncx falls atop of the Wildcats scoring leaders as well with 8.2 ppg. The Belgium native is the lone rookie to have started in all six games so far this season and has notched three double-digit contests of her own. 

Sienna Dauer has appeared in six contests so far this year and most recently scored a season-best eight points against Presby last weekend on a 4-of-9 shooting performance from the floor. 

Edina Strauzs has seen time in four contests playing a career-high 11 minutes at Cincinnati while Emilie Bessell has checked into four games as well. Bessell is coming off of a career night scoring 11 points over Presby. Fellow rookie Stephanie Gutierrez also appeared in the Presbyterian game for her season debut.

Virginia Tech is coming off of the heels of an 87-69 win over Elon in Blacksburg, Va. Nov. 23. The victory extended the Hokies early-season winning streak to four games with its only loss coming by way of 71-52 triumph for Iowa on Nov. 10. 

So far this season, Virginia Tech is averaging 83.3 points and 37.3 rebounds per game while allowing its opponents to score 65.0 points and collect 30.7 rebounds per contest. The Hokies are connecting on .505 percent of their shots from the floor, .346 percent from the arc and .717 from the foul line. 

Carleigh Wenzel is the leading scorer for Virginia Tech averaging 15.8 ppg while shooting .400 from the floor and .333 from 3-point range. Rose Micheaux serves as one of the Hokies most versatile players with per game averages of 15.2 ppg, 9.7 rpg and an efficient .606 shooting percentage from the field.
