Women’s Basketball Drops Pair of Games at Fort Myers Tip-off
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Davidson fell to Virginia Tech, 79-50, in the opening round of the Fort Myers Tip-off Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats, who fall to 3-4 on the season, will take on Belmont tomorrow at 5 p.m. inside Suncoast Credit Union Arena.
Despite the setback, Candice Lienafa led Davidson with 12 points, scoring seven of the 12 in the final quarter of the contest. Former Hokie Charlise Dunn tallied 11 points for the Wildcats while Katie Donovan brought in a roster-high five rebounds.
Virginia Tech (6-1) shot 49.1 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-10 effort from behind the 3-point line.
After an Issy Morgan triple cut the deficit to 9-6 early, the Hokies closed the opening quarter on a 14-0 run to grab control.
BELMONT GAME – Unable to overcome a fast start by Belmont, Davidson fell to the Bruins, 69-59, in non-conference women’s basketball action on the final day of the Fort Myers Tip-off Saturday evening.
The setback drops Wildcats to 3-5 overall with four more non-conference games on the 2024-25 schedule.
After Davidson grabbed the early 5-0 advantage, the Bruins reeled off nine straight points as part of a 13-2 run to go in front for good.
Belmont (3-4) shot 69.2 percent in the opening quarter before finishing at a 50-percent clip, while holding the Wildcats to just 23-of-56 (.411).
The ‘Cats cut the deficit to 21-15 at the end of one, but Belmont started the second quarter fast, eventually carrying a 39-25 lead into the half.
Charlise Dunn paced the Wildcats with a season-high 16 points to go along with eight rebounds. Freshman Candice Lienafa added 14 off the bench on 6-of-7 shooting (2-of-2 from 3-point range) for her fifth double-figure performance of the season.
A Dunn layup capped a small spurt to get the ‘Cats within 47-41 late in the third, but the Bruins answered again stretching the margin back to double digits.
Belmont was led by Carmyn Harrison, who finished with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals.
