Flags at half-mast; funeral processions, body in repose; these are all ways we are trying to remember and honor President Carter. But my thought is that the best way to honor and remember him is to follow in his footsteps! Actively care for others without regard to their race, gender or country. Focus on countries and people fighting waterborne diseases. Help provide safe and decent housing everywhere. Make everyone’s mental health a priority. Monitor elections to ensure honest results and work for peace around this world.

And don’t forget to love and respect your family members every day and in every way possible. Never let your big head get above your big heart! Be Jimmy, Billy, Sally or Judy…Give thanks to God for His grace and mercy and share His love with everyone. Amen.

Davidson resident Paul Leonard served on the Board of Habitat for Humanity (national), including two years as the Chairman. Additionally, he was also employed as interim President of Habitat for Humanity International. It was in his work with Habitat that he got to know former President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter.
