In Memoriam: David Jerry Fagg

David Jerry Fagg, 88 of Davidson, died December 30, 2024 at his home. He was born in High Point, NC on April 27, 1936 to the late Julius and Carrie Fagg.

He attended High Point High School and graduated from Davidson College in 1958 where he captained the football and wrestling teams. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and president his senior year. He received the Tommy Peters Award as the most outstanding athlete at Davidson College. He received a masters degree from Boston University in education while serving as Lieutenant Commander in the Navy.

Coach Fagg attended the press conference welcoming new head football coach Thakkar on December 20.

He started his coaching career at Garringer High School in Charlotte then coached at the college level at The Citadel, Davidson College, Georgia Tech, University of Hawaii, University of South Carolina, University of Arizona then returned to Davidson College. Fagg received the James P. Hendrix award in 2009 given by Davidson College to a football letterman with outstanding accomplishments in their chosen field. After retiring from coaching, he continued to work at Davidson College in fundraising and was a color analyst for the Wildcats’ football radio broadcast.

David was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Carrie Fagg; his brothers Julius Jr., Thomas and Donald; and sisters Drucilla, Nancy and Delphine.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Ellington Fagg; sons David Ellington (wife Mary Beth), Scott Fagg, Brandon Ellington (wife Nancy) and Jon Fagg (wife Amanda); nine grandchildren David II (wife Ashlyn), Bartlett, Betsy (husband Kelsey), Malia (husband Taylor), Hannah, Brandon II, Jon II (wife Ashton), Reed and Ellie; and four great grandchildren Leigh, Tripp, Tucker and Carson.

A service will be held at Davidson College Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 1st at 12:00 noon to celebrate his life and a reception following at the Congregation House.
