Mahjong Beginner Open Play is a program where adults can play Mahjong at the beginner level. This means you know how to play but need to practice. At this time, this is a drop-in and play session for beginners, no formal instruction will be provided. It is, however, a safe space to practice playing with people who are also in the beginning stages. The tiles, mats, and cards are all provided in this session. Just bring yourself 🙂 American Mahjong is a tile game stamped with Chinese symbols. Four players play the game at a time. The goal of the game is to be the first to match your tiles to a specific set from a scorecard by picking and discarding. Mahjong is a fun game to play, but also it has many cognitive benefits. It is known to help dementia, aid concentration and memorization abilities. Come practice this inherently social game, and enjoy mental and social benefits!

In the last few decades, French composer Philippe Manoury has been a pioneer in electroacoustic interactivity, while his solo piano music creates “analog” versions of this interactivity by exploiting the instrument’s potential for sympathetic resonance. Fresh from recording Manoury’s piano sonatas, Davidson’s William Fried features music of this sonic explorer along with miniatures by Debussy, Messiaen, and Murail. Free and open to the public.

Babies experience brain stimulation through language and socialization. Engage your little one with new sights and sounds through books, songs, and rhymes. This group is a majorly lapsit program for babies from birth to 18 months. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Only the first 12 babies will be accepted. Join us on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 2:00 pm for The In-Person Davidson Branch Book Club! This month we’ll being reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.  Feel free to read the original or branch out by watching a movie, reading an alternative version such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or check out this guide to Regency Romances.  We’ll be sipping tea (pinkies out!) in this Bridgerton-Inspired discussion. This program will be provided by Davidson library staff.

Students can visit the Student Success Center to work with a trained volunteer to get support in one of three ways: homework help, skills practice, or Tutor.com help. Note: The Student Success Center is not a tutoring center, but rather a space designed to seek learning support from a volunteer. We want to be your school aged child’s reading buddy! Sign up your school aged child for a 30-minute reading buddy session to share in the joy and power of reading. Library volunteers read aloud favorite books by asking questions, building vocabulary, and connecting to your child’s world.  This semester will begin January 29 – April 30. Sessions are available Wednesdays from 4pm-6pm. Children register for a weekly reading buddy time for the entire semester!  Sessions are offered on a first come, first serve basis. About the Book: In Mountains of the Moon, her fifth collection, Irene Blair Honeycutt takes readers on a journey from creeks of childhood through rivers and inlets all the way to the Red Sea and back again. The natural world has always been Honeycutt’s closest companion and theme, never more so than in these poems—so many of them written during the forced exile of the pandemic—through which we learn the power of living within the paradox of joy and sorrow. Title: “Putting the F in Chemistry: A Molecular Exploration through the Footnotes of the Periodic Table, the Technology-Critical Rare Earth Elements, and Our Nuclear Waste Legacy” Abstract: The subtleties of structure and bonding in compounds of the f-block, the heaviest naturally occurring elements are still poorly-understood. Yet a fundamental understanding is needed to develop environmentally cleaner ways to extract technology-critical rare earth metals, and for the safe, long-term handling of our nuclear waste legacies. This lecture will explore what chemistry can teach us about these complicated but important metals.
