Even in the lone game lost to Lafayette, the Wildcats still had time to celebrate several home runs. Someone needs to confirm Jamie Daly’s (#12) vertical leap.

Sunday — Five first-inning runs set the Davidson Wildcats on the right track Sunday afternoon in a 9-1 win over Lafayette at Wilson Field.

The victory was the second straight for the Wildcats, who improved to 4-6 and secured their first series win of the season.

Jamie Daly led the offense, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI, while fellow freshman Cooper Collins was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Davidson’s five-run first inning included four hits and two errors. Eli Putnam’s RBI-single up the middle and two-RBI hits by Jack Cotrone and Collins brought Wildcats in.

The Wildcats added a run in the sixth when Scotty Edwards was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two in the seventh off a Forrest Lietz sacrifice fly and a Collins bunt single. Daly’s second double drove in the game’s final run in the eighth.

Starter Matt Weber threw four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Brycen Champey allowed two hits and struck out one while pitching the final 3.1 innings and getting the save.

Eli Putnam (#11) didn’t take any chances on scoring a run with a throw close behind.

Saturday — Michael O’Shaughnessy’s eighth-inning three-run home run and Will Brooks’ two-RBI single moments later helped Davidson apply the 10-rule mercy rule Saturday afternoon in a 15-5 win over Lafayette at Wilson Field.

The win evened the three-game weekend series and snapped a four-game losing skid for the Wildcats, who improved to 3-6.

Brooks finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, while Jack Cotrone was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a sacrifice fly. O’Shaughnessy and Cider Canon had two hits apiece, and eight Wildcats drove in runs, also including Noah Jouras, Jamie Daly, Eli Putnam and Cooper Collins.

After Lafayette struck first Saturday, the Wildcats scored five runs in the first and never trailed again.

Starter Isaac Fix threw 5.2 innings in the win, his first of the year. He allowed five hits and three earned runs and struck out three.

Jason Ban entered in the seventh with Davidson leading 8-5 and the bases loaded. He pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one, to get his first save of the season.

Friday — Davidson hit four home runs — including two off the bat of freshman Jamie Daly — in Friday’s series opener against Lafayette, but it was the visiting Leopards who got the edge on the scoreboard, 7-6.

With the loss, the Wildcats fell to 2-6.

Daly homered in the third and fifth, both to right-center, to push his team-best total to three. Cider Canon homered in the second inning, in his first at-bat of the season, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. And Jack Cotrone’s homer in the sixth cut Lafayette’s lead to 5-4.

Daly (3-for-4) also doubled in a run in the eighth, after Cooper Collins tripled. The Wildcats got the tying run to second base in the ninth after Cotrone’s RBI-single cut the Leopards’ lead to one.

Daly’s three RBIs takes his total to a team-best nine. Canon, Cotrone and Michael O’Shaughnessy also had multiple hits.

Starter Wilson Perkins threw 6.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs, in the loss.
