Remembering (The thoughts of the Prodigal Son after returning home): a Poem by Jody Seymour

by | May 28, 2025

Remembering
(The thoughts of the Prodigal Son
after returning home)

Fresh yet stale are the memories
Smells of a pigpen still
linger in my mind
Yet, the thrill of a far country
remains lodged in
my still restless
soul

What is it that yearns
to wander away?
Home should be enough
Why the urge to stray?
Weak still I am
Prodigal is my ever
seeking spirit

But the scars on my memory
will grab hold
this time
Lost is part of me
though I’m found
It is a father’s undeserved
forgiveness that
bids me stay

Yet why does the horizon
of excess call?
Is there an urging toward danger
in each of us
that dares to leave
a father’s watch?
Turn away child of woe

You see a sun setting
not rising
The shadows of what seemed
so right
led you to a tempting
darkness
Turn…a father’s waiting arms
will hold you
yet again
