Join us for some fun outdoor chalk doodling, bubbles, and music! After storytime, children will have the opportunity to use chalk and decorate the concrete in front of the library. DLC Greenway Bike Ride with Lisa Watts

July 19 @ 8:00 a.m.

Meet at the Pump House on South Street

The morning after her talk, Lisa Watts will lead an adult (16+) bike ride to showcase Davidson’s incredible system of greenways. The ride will start at the Pump House on South Street and weave through various greenways and surface streets out to the West Branch Nature Preserve and back into town and will be approximately 15 miles.  Sign-up is limited and required HERE.

Come enjoy Lake Davidson on the watercraft of your choice: single or double kayak, paddle board or canoe! Meet our staff to rent your watercraft at the Nature Preserve behind Davidson Day School on Jetton Street and have fun on a self-guided paddling adventure. Watercrafts will be available on Saturdays from 2- 5 p.m. April- October. Register to reserve your watercraft of choice. $15 Resident; $20 Non-Resident

Mahjong Beginner Open Play is a program where adults can play Mahjong at the beginner level. This means you know how to play but need to practice. At this time, this is a drop-in and play session for beginners, no formal instruction will be provided. It is, however, a safe space to practice playing with people who are also in the beginning stages. The tiles, mats, and cards are all provided in this session. Just bring yourself 🙂 American Mahjong is a tile game stamped with Chinese symbols. Four players play the game at a time. The goal of the game is to be the first to match your tiles to a specific set from a scorecard by picking and discarding. Mahjong is a fun game to play, but also it has many cognitive benefits. It is known to help dementia, aid concentration and memorization abilities. Come practice this inherently social game, and enjoy mental and social benefits!

Babies experience brain stimulation through language and socialization. Engage your little one with new sights and sounds through books, songs, and rhymes. Music at St Alban’s is proud to present a special edition of our concert series with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. “A Morning of Music and Conversation” will feature lutenist and guitarist William Simms. Join us via Zoom for a performance followed by a period of questions and answers. William Simms is an active performer of early music, equally adept on lute, theorbo and baroque guitar. This event is made possible with funding from a Town of Davidson grant.

Practice your French speaking and listening skills in a relaxed group environment. No lectures, just conversation! We will talk about various topics, including art, civilization, culture, sports, sociology, nature, and talk about the many aspects of daily life in France and other French-speaking countries. It will be a time of sharing ideas, dreams, past experiences, and much more. There will usually be a light preparation at home such as reading a short newspaper or magazine article, watching a you-tube video, etc. as a starting point for our discussion. We will also have plenty of time for informal and spontaneous conversation. Requirements: 16 years old or older, French fluency at an intermediate or advanced level.

She is eccentric and rude….” Sybil Van Antwerp is a mother and grandmother, divorced, retired from a distinguished career in law, an avid gardener, and a writer of letters. Most mornings, around half past ten, Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books. Because at seventy-three, Sybil has used her letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. But as Sybil expects her life to go on as it always has, letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life. Filled with knowledge that only comes from a life fully lived, The Correspondent is a gem of a novel that is a testament to the power of the written word.

She attended James Madison University for her bachelor’s in English literature, as well as Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, for her master’s of philosophy in creative writing.
