It is, however, a safe space to practice playing with people who are also in the beginning stages. The tiles, mats, and cards are all provided in this session. Just bring yourself 🙂 American Mahjong is a tile game stamped with Chinese symbols. Four players play the game at a time. The goal of the game is to be the first to match your tiles to a specific set from a scorecard by picking and discarding. Mahjong is a fun game to play, but also it has many cognitive benefits. It is known to help dementia, aid concentration and memorization abilities. Come practice this inherently social game, and enjoy mental and social benefits!

This month we will be discussing Three Days in June by Anne Tyler
From the publisher: "Gail Baines is long divorced from her husband, Max, and not especially close to her grown daughter, Debbie. Today is the day before Debbie's wedding. To start, Gail loses her job--or quits, depending who you ask. Then, Max arrives unannounced on Gail's doorstep, carrying a cat, without a place to stay and without even a suit in which to walk their daughter down the aisle. But the true crisis lands when Debbie shares with her parents a secret she has just learned about her husband-to-be. It will not only throw the wedding itself into question but also send Gail back into her past and how her own relationship fell apart. Told with deep sensitivity and a tart sense of humor, full of the joys and heartbreaks of love and marriage and family life, Three Days in June is a triumph, and gives us the perennially bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer at the height of her powers"

Main Street Books Presents: Aarushi Bhandari: Attention and Alienation
Sept 11 @ 7:00 p.m.
Main Street Books
The worldwide spread of the internet has revolutionized communication at a harrowing cost: the relentless commodification of attention. Algorithm-driven capitalism extracts profit from not only physical bodies but also the emotional and creative labor of internet users. This economic system alienates us from our inmost selves and gives us only a gnawing longing that cannot be satiated—a spiraling collective mental health crisis. The exchange is deeply unequal: we pay attention and receive alienation.
Aarushi Bhandari offers a new way to understand the political economy of attention, combining quantitative analysis and personal narrative to critique the role of information and communications technologies in global society. Ranging across levels, from international development policy to online social movements through individual internet users, she examines how these technologies have fostered a host of unequal exchanges.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Aarushi Bhandari is an assistant professor of sociology at Davidson College.
