Field Hockey Pushes No. 20 Deacons in 2OT loss

Matilda Collins (#30)
DAVIDSON — Pushed to the brink, No. 20 Wake Forest responded and escaped Davidson with a 2-1 double-overtime field hockey win Friday night at Belk Turf Field.
Mia Schoenbeck scored both Deacon goals, including the tying goal with 12 seconds left in regulation and the game-winner 3:56 into the second 10-minute overtime period.
The teams played to a scoreless draw for nearly 55 minutes, and while Wake Forest had significant advantages in penalty corners (12-4) and shots (25-6), it was Davidson that took a 1-0 lead on Matilda Collins' penalty stroke. Collins also had two defensive saves as the Wildcats answered threat after threat.
But Schoenbeck and the Deacons converted a penalty corner in the waning seconds of regulation to even the score and get new life. Her goal in the second extra session was unassisted.
Liv Goeke added a defensive save for the Wildcats, and keeper Avery Foster had nine saves.
