Town Seeks Representative to Serve on Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority
The Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners approved placing a referendum on the November 4 ballot for voter consideration of an additional one-cent sales and use tax for countywide transportation purposes, and the ability to establish a regional transit authority. If the November 4, 2025 Transportation Sales Tax referendum is approved by Mecklenburg County voters, the PAVE Act (Session Law 2025-39) requires the formation of a Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority (MPTA) to act as the governing body for the public transit services (passenger bus, rail, micro-transit) in Mecklenburg County.
Each town within Mecklenburg County will have one appointment to the MPTA’s governing board. The Town of Davidson is now seeking applications. The individual selected must represent Davidson’s values, priorities, and transportation philosophy, and work towards ensuring our community’s voice is strongly present in regional transportation discussions and decisions. If approved by the voters in November, the revenue from the countywide tax is projected to generate billions of dollars for improvements in roads, rail, and buses, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion in the area as well as improve mobility, regional economic competitiveness, and quality of life. Revenue from the one-cent sales tax would be allocated as follows: 40% for Roads, 40% for Rail, and 20% for Bus. Over the next 30 years, an estimated $19.4 billion will be generated by the sales tax increase countywide to support improving transportation infrastructure.
