A Stitch in Time: Davidson Retiree Finds New Purpose and Talent Through Quilting

“You’ve Got Mail”

When longtime resident Elizabeth “Liz” Harris retired from CPCC, she wasn’t quite sure what to do with her newfound free time. After decades of early mornings and busy schedules, the quiet hours at home felt both liberating and a little too still.

"Maryland Marshes"

She and her husband Ed had a vacation home in Asheville where Liz took a quilting class at AB Tech Community College. Ed bought her a sewing machine when she retired. She embraced a new hobby that soon became a passion stitched with color, creativity, and generosity.

For over 30 years she was intrigued by creative mailboxes and took photos of them. What should she do with these pictures that inspired her thoughts of mail deliverers’ smiles?? Trying to incorporate her photos into a quilt, she edited and printed forty-eight of them to create 4” x 6” pieces of fabric to fashion a quilt.

"Colorado Hike"

Liz added fabrics with themes featuring postage, script, and letters to create a quilt she has entitled “You’ve Got Mail.” Each photo is quilted! What a visual treat! It now hangs proudly in the lobby of the Davidson Town Post Office. It is a gift she donated to brighten the space for neighbors and postal workers alike.

"Postcard from Doubtful Sound"

Liz is a remarkable artist, and her quilts include landscaping, confetti quilts, and modern quilt interpretations. She sent her “Doves” quilt to the Parkland school after the shootings.

She meets monthly with other talented members of a quilting bee (LOL, Ladies of the Lake) where they share their expertise and enjoy a social aspect of an incredible art form.

Indulge yourself with a visit to the Davidson Post Office! You will be delighted.
