DAVIDSON, NC – A community meeting on the Potts-Sloan-Beaty Project (U-5907) will take place on Monday, December 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble Street, Davidson. Representatives from the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will present an update on the transportation project and be available for questions.

The Potts-Sloan-Beaty Corridor is a transportation project starting on Potts Street near the Town limits with the Town of Cornelius, and ending at the intersection of Sloan Street, Griffith Street, and Beaty Street. There are 3 main parts of the project:

  1. Improved sidewalk along Potts Street and Sloan Street.
  2. A new road section between the Potts Street cul-de-sac and Sloan Street.
  3. A roundabout at the intersection of Griffith Street, Sloan Street, and Beaty Street.

This project has been planned since 1983 and identified as a priority project through various adopted plans based on resident input. The benefits include enhanced pedestrian facilities and connectivity, a safer, more efficient intersection, and an additional road connection.

One of the most important parts of the work is managing buried asbestos so that it is not a hazard to workers, the residents, and people traveling on these streets. Contractors will be adhering to all federal and state regulations pertaining to asbestos.

NCDOT reports the following first phase of construction-related activities began the week of November 17:

  1. Roadway clearing starts moving south to north along Potts and Sloan Streets.
  2. Asbestos sampling was conducted; most positive samples were found in the area around the new road connection.
  3. For areas with positive asbestos samples, trees and vegetation will be cut and the asbestos abatement contractor will remediate those areas.
  4. Air monitors will be in place and workers will wear appropriate safety gear.

Additional information is available on the Town's website here.
