As a memorial to the lives lost to AIDS, the Van Every/Smith Galleries Biology Department, Center for Student Health & Well Being, and Davidson College Arts and Creative Engagement shrouded sculptures around campus on December 1. The works are covered to create a visual sign reminding our campus how much art and creativity have been lost to the world due to the AIDS epidemic. In doing so, it is hoped that people will consider all the lives cut short by the disease while imagining a world without the artistic contributions of those who have died.

The first National Day Without Art was held December 1, 1989 in conjunction with the World Health Organization’s AIDS Awareness Day, as a nationwide day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis.

The Davidson College Permanent Art Collection and Sculpture Garden together serve as a research center by offering students and members of the Davidson community the opportunity to interact with more than 4,200 works of art that span five centuries.
