Town Statement Regarding Tree Removal

The community concern regarding the tree removal as part of the Potts-Sloan-Beaty construction project was part of the discussion of the NCDOT meeting Monday night, December 8. Subsequent, the Town issued the following statement. The statement was also read at Tuesday night's Town Board Meeting.
A statement about the removal of several mature trees along Griffith Street near Roosevelt Wilson Park.
Unfortunately, this was necessary for the Potts-Sloan-Beaty roadway project being completed by NCDOT. The Town understands how important our tree canopy is to the community, and every effort was made to preserve as many trees as possible throughout this road construction process. The Town will work closely with NCDOT and our Town arborist to ensure a robust and thoughtful replanting plan. Roundabouts are designed to slow traffic and improve safety, which requires adjustments to roadway approaches. In addition, utility relocations and the expanded footprint of the roundabout made some tree removal unavoidable. Often Town’s goals, shaped by resident input, can be in tension with one another. In this case, the Potts-Sloan-Beaty Project advances the Town’s priorities around connecting people and places and improving pedestrian safety. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to balance these important community values.
