Second Placemaking Installation in the Town of Davidson
From Wednesday, December 10 through Saturday, December 13, a colorful sidewalk mural was installed on both sides of South Main Street at its intersection with Eugenia Street and South Village Lane and directly flanking the crosswalk. Part of the Town’s ongoing Placemaking initiative, the sidewalk art was originally recommended by the Town’s Livability Board which aimed to better direct pedestrians towards crosswalks and improve pedestrian visibility for motorists. These are both goals captured in the Town’s Vision Zero Action Plan. Local artist Nico Amortegui installed the colorful sidewalk mural.

The Placemaking initiative aims to reimagine and improve underutilized spaces for public benefit by providing an opportunity for residents and community groups throughout town to collaboratively impact the public realm. Placemaking supports the Town of Davidson Strategic Plan: Healthy, Livable, & Vibrant Community. The Davidson Board of Commissioners allocated $5,000 to fund the program this year. Members of Town staff reviewed the application, and the Davidson Public Art Commission (DPAC) provided a formal recommendation for approval last month.
Davidson’s Placemaking initiative is a reimbursable grant program. Funds may be used to support the installation of Placemaking projects as outlined in the Placemaking Guide and application. After several public discussions with the Board of Commissioners, the Davidson Placemaking Program launched in April 2024. The South Main Street sidewalk mural is the second Placemaking installation in town following last Fall’s painted crosswalks and street mural project on South Street adjacent to Davidson Elementary.
